My daughter just had her third birthday, and I threw her a Teddy Bear Picnic Birthday Party in our new backyard here in Denver. It was a pretty small gathering (we only just moved here and don’t know many folks just yet!) but it was a lovely celebration.
In addition to the decorations, I baked Miss M a teddy bear cake (click here to read why my daughter’s birthday cake will always be homemade). It was more difficult than I thought to find a good tutorial on making this cake, so I thought I’d share my method with you!
How to Make a Teddy Bear Birthday Cake
First, bake three 9 inch round cakes (chocolate). The cake recipe I used can be found here from Add A Pinch.
Then, cut three smaller circles out of two of the cakes for the ears. The third full-size cake can be used as the head. A small bowl is a great tool to cut the smaller circles (just eyeball the size). After cutting the circles, cut a small curve out of the bottom of two of them. Then, fix them in place for ears with icing. Place the third circle on top for the nose.
Icing was the key to this whole process. I used this buttercream icing recipe from Two Sisters Crafting and added some brown food coloring (for a dye-free, natural coloring click here). I used slightly less coloring to get the lighter brown for the nose and center of the ears.
Wilton’s White Icing Gel can be used to draw the eyes. Wilton’s Chocolate Candy Melts are perfect for the eyeballs and nose.
His eyebrows are smaller pieces of cake, affixed with icing and covered in chocolate sprinkles!
Add texture on the ears using Wilton Tip 233. For the rest of the fur, simply ice the entire cake using a butter knife or spatula, and add texture with a fork. So easy!
